Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin

The rioting mob forced the French royal family to leave Versailles and settle in the Tuilleries but that Parisian palace caused a doleful impression in everyone as it had been unoccupied for some years. The six-year old Dauphin exclaimed:

—“But everything is so ugly here, Mamma!”

Filled with sadness, the Queen tried to comfort him, saying:

—“Louis XV was very fond of this palace. We should not show ourselves more demanding than him.”
