Battle lines are drawn over the historic heart of England – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph:

One of the two most important centres of ancient Wessex – alma mater of Alfred the Great – Sherborne has leapt into the forefront of a growing campaign to protect the special character of historic towns against the spread of drab uniformity.

Wessex’s other great centre, Winchester, whose original street plan was laid out by King Alfred himself, has already lost a similar battle…

Some 300 miles to the north, the City of Durham Trust is fighting plans to build more than 3,000 houses…

Similar increases are planned for Salisbury, Lichfield and Wells…
