Prince George Wears Shorts Because of Tradition

Harper’s Bazaar U.K. did some investigating and learned the rationale behind George’s out-of-the-ordinary garb. The reason the toddler prince is forever in shorts harkens back to a very Fiddler on the Roof reason: tradition.

“It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts,” etiquette expert William Hanson told Bazaar. “Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on younger boys are one of the silent class markers that we have in England.

Hanson said the royal family most likely maintains the tradition as a nod to the past rather than to differentiate itself from other classes. You’ll recall seeing pictures of young Prince William and Prince Harry in shorts similar to the ones George wears. Still, there’s always an inherent class differentiation when holding onto an antiquated way of doing something in modern times.
