The duke of Choiseul, as French ambassador to Austria, had been the principal agent in negotiating the marriage of the Dauphin, the future Louis XVI, and the Austrian Archduchess Marie Antoinette.

Preceded by the duke, King Louis XV went to Compiègne to meet his future granddaughter-in-law. As the duke made his bow, Marie Antoinette said: “Sir, I will never forget that you made my happiness.”

“And that of France,” the ambassador replied joyfully.
